The Swamp Fox refers to Francis Marion who gained notoriety in the Carolinas during the Revolutionary war. He and his militia harassed the British army using guerilla tactics.
His methods, at a time when most troops simply stood in lines and shot at each other, were very unorthodox in western militaries, but allowed him to keep the British from ever gaining a solid hold in the area that he operated. The Swamp Fox gained his nickname because he set up his base in a swamp.
In Forged, the man known has the Swamp Fox has many of the traits as the man he was based from. However, in Forged he wears a mask to frighten his enemies during battle and his hands are claw-like. He becomes a strong ally and friend to the main character, Katherine.
Below is an excerpt:
“It’s a trap!” Lord Middleton shouted. All four of the men turned on their horses gazing down the road toward Ashton Manor. Katherine was surprised to see their backs directly in front of her and the Swamp Fox.
The Swamp Fox pulled a skinny, wooden tube, as long as his arm, from his pack and blew a quick burst of air through it. Lord Middleton’s horse reared as the dart from the Swamp Fox’s tube stabbed into its neck and the man fell off. The horse knocked over Marcus’s horse and the younger Middleton went crashing to the ground as well.
“Stay here,” the Swamp Fox said.
The Fox burst from the cotton as Thomas Finely and the other gentleman turned to see the Middletons fall. They shot two muskets as the Fox dove across the road into the cotton opposite Katherine—grabbing both of the Middleton’s muskets as he went. Both shots missed. Thomas began to reload as the six men on foot emerged out of the cotton, panting.
“He’s there,” the older red-head shouted pointing to the cotton. The six men lowered their muskets. Katherine heard a musket shot from the place where the Swamp Fox had hidden. She noticed that the six men were standing over the tufts of cotton the Fox had dropped on the road. The cotton exploded when the Fox shot his musket. The six men flew limply through the air, their guns scattering.
